Join us for Drawn Threads and Running Stitches, a two-day conference bringing together researchers, practitioners, and curators to explore embroidery, textiles, and costume with a particular focus on whitework.
The Ulster Folk Museum (National Museums NI) holds Ireland's largest public collection of dress and textiles relating primarily to the nine counties of Ulster. This collection includes dress and accessories, lace, linens, and embroidery, dating from 1760 to present day.
This two-day conference will take place in the Ulster Folk Museum and nearby Cultra Manor. Papers will be presented in the mornings, followed by a selection of demonstrations and activities in the afternoon.
About the project
Drawn Threads and Running Stitches is a current project at the Ulster Folk Museum focused on the research, conservation, and rehousing of a significant collection of whitework embroidered textiles. The project is supported by The Broderers’ and the Associated Companies’ Joint Venture Project.

The conference will be held in the Kennedy Room in Cultra Manor which is in the grounds of the Ulster Folk Museum.
Tea/coffee will be served in the Drawing Room in the mornings and afternoons and lunch will be provided on both days, included in the cost of your ticket.
Papers will be presented in the mornings. In the afternoons, a selection of demonstrations and activities will be taking place in Cultra Manor or the Ulster Folk Museum.
We advise you to bring clothing suitable for being outdoors in November for some of the afternoon elements.
